Frequently Asked Questions

Does my chimney need lining?

No, if the chimney is in good order.  But for many reasons it is always advisable to fit a liner:

  • Stoves work best with a flue diameter as close as possible to that specified by the stove manufacturer.
  • Hot smoke rises because it is hot, cool it down and it will slow, stop or sink.  It does not rise well in cold chimneys where there are non-smooth surfaces.  Those combustibles (smoke) when cooled deposit tar and condensation which can bleed through mortar and damage property, staining wall paper etc.
  • A chimney fire is more likely if you do not fit a chimney liner.
  • Solid fuel stoves need all the help they can get in keeping the rising smoke nice and hot (hence liners and sometimes insulated liners).

Do I need a hearth?

Yes, you will always need a hearth.  Hearths should be constructed of suitably robust materials and appropriate dimensions adhering to building regulations.
